Travel Britain: Heathrow International Airport
Anytime that you travel abroad you need to be sure to prepare yourself. There are many things that you need to know such as the currency that is used at your destination. You should also be aware of what to expect of the airport that you plan on arriving at. It is smart to know something about the terminals and the services that are offered. If you plan to travel to London and are flying into Heathrow then you are arriving at the London International Airport.
Heathrow International, as it is known among locals, is the largest airport in Europe. This is a very busy airport that is always busy with flights arriving every minute of every day. This airport was originally called the Great Western Aerodome in the 1930s. Heathrow was the name of the small village that was destroyed in order to make room to build this airport, and this is why the locals call it this.
The first commercial flight from this airport took place on May 31, 1946. This airport has only been growing since then including the addition of more runways. The Queen of England, Elizabeth II, officially opened the first passenger terminal. She is a large supporter of this airport and much of its success is due to her. She continues to have great affection for this airport and helped to celebrate when the first slab of concrete was laid in 1953.
Because this airport grew so rapidly and so many travelers were flying into this airport London expanded its underground railway to Heathrow Airport in 1977. This was celebrated by all as it allowed business travelers and tourists alike to travel from the airport to downtown London in less than an hour. It is also much cheaper than taking a taxi into the downtown area which could end up costing you a lot of money.
Heathrow Airport offers four terminals. These four terminals handle the millions of travelers that come through the airport each and every day. However, this airport is growing so rapidly that they are busy constructing a fifth terminal that is scheduled to be completed in 2008. Another satellite building is also being constructed and should be finished in 2011.
Seeing as how Heathrow Airport is the largest airport in Europe it is only fitting that it offers some of the best services in the world. There are plenty of restaurants and coffee shops in the mezzanine that cater to any travelers eating needs. This airport also offers first class shopping opportunities. Many people choose to arrive at the airport several hours in advance so they can take advantage of the wonderful shops this airport has to offer. The other normal airport services are also offered such as currency exchange offices and postal services. Since this is the third largest airport in the world Heathrow Airport is almost a tourist attraction all on its own!
